What time of the year is the best time to book a fishing trip or training?
Between December and August are the best fishing times. October and November is also a good time to catch Yellow fin Tuna which go to 30kg! they average 15-25kg. Also there can be lots of bait fish. During the winter months it stays quite warm here, we launch on a morning at first light for the best fishing, however we often fish afternoons for a couple of hours. Between August and December is a good time to learn for a complete novice, we make use of the dams and rivers.

What will I need to bring?
Hat, 500ml water, shoes or sandals that will stay on, sunglasses, clothes that dry quickly like a rash vest, a light warm jacket like a second skin in the winter as it is cold in the morning, something for bluebottle stings, snacks, energy bars are god to take, a fishing license which you must also pay for skipper of a vessel. Is my Kayak stable?
Yes the Kayaks we use are stable, they are sit on Kayaks with special fishing hatches. We have a kayak for all shapes and sizes to ensure your comfort.

What about safety? We launch from a beach which is protected by Shark nets and Lifeguards

What if I have never paddled before? No problem we can practice in the local river or dam

What if I have never fished from a Kayak / Fishingski before? No problem we can have a briefing before we go 1 hour| Half day | or full day

What about bottom fish? No game fish are much better fun!

Do you fish in the Sardine Run? Yes only with experienced paddlers

Do you provide accommodation? Yes we have a Guest House www.umkomaasguesthouse.com or we can use a budget / self catering or camping accommodation if required

Can I bring my kids?
Yes and bring the wife, however the younger children may only paddle in the river or lagoon. Getting the young ones into kayaking and fishing at an early age is a gift that you can give them that will provide them with years of enjoyment.

Where do you usually fish?
Our base on the Durban South Coast. We prefer to launch at Scottburgh as it has all facilities and lifeguards, the fishing is very good.

What about Crocs and Sharks? Are they dangerous?
Please remember that we are visitors to their home. These creatures tend to try to avoid human contact and are usually more afraid of us than we are of them. You will see them out on the water from time to time. They are amazing to watch, from a distance. The most dangerous times are when fish are bleeding or the visibility is low. You must be extra vigilant if you fish in the sardine rub. Bottom fishing also attracts Sharks.
